Indoor Emissions from Household Combustion of Coal

چکیده

Coal is a highly variable fuel, which ranges from high heating-value anthracite through various forms of bituminous coal to intermediates in coal formation, viz. lignite and peat. Each of these types of fuel can contain different levels of moisture, non-combustible inorganic material (ash), sulfur, and sometimes significant levels of other impurities, e.g. arsenic, fluorine, lead and mercury. Raw coal may be used in many forms, from lumps and briquettes to fine powders. Processing of coal may be as simple as forming coal balls or cakes by hand followed by sun-drying, or it may be a sophisticated procedure, blending coal into a uniform mixture with binders to reduce sulfur and particulate emissions and formed into briquettes designed to burn efficiently and cleanly in special stoves. 1.1.2 Constituents of coal emissions

Carcinogenicity of household solid fuel combustion and of high-temperature frying.

In October, 2006, 19 scientists from eight countries met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, to assess the carcinogenicity of household solid fuel combustion (coal and biomass) and of high-temperature frying. These assessments will be published as volume 95 of the IARC Monographs. About half of the world’s population, mostly in low-resource and mediumresou...

Semi-coke briquettes: towards reducing emissions of primary PM2.5, particulate carbon, and carbon monoxide from household coal combustion in China

Direct household use of unprocessed raw coals for cooking and heating without any air pollution control device has caused serious indoor and outdoor environment problems by emitting particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants. This study examined household emission reduction by switching from unprocessed bituminous and anthracite coals to processed semi-coke briquettes. Two typical stoves we...

Household Air Pollution (HAP) and Cancer: What (HAP)pens Next?

Humans around the world rely on a diversity of energy sources to provide heat for cooking and home comfort. Each of the energy sources utilized has a series of impacts on the environment and human health from extraction or harvest through combustion. At the household level, fuels that are considered to be clean, including gas, oil, and purchased electricity, yield lower levels of particulate em...

Biomass combustion and potential health effects in the developing countries.

B combustion is a very large source of aerosol particles on a global scale. It is estimated that 20 % of the black carbon and 30 % of the organic carbon aerosol mass emissions are due to wild land fi res and intentional burning of agricultural waste in Asia. However in those numbers residential fuel combustion is not included, which is considered a larger source of black carbon and organic carb...

Indoor Air Pollution from Household Fuel Combustion in China: a Review

Nearly all China’s rural residents and a shrinking fraction of urban residents use solid fuels (biomass and coal) for household cooking and heating. As a result, by use of global metaanalyses of epidemiological studies, it is estimated that indoor air pollution from solid fuel use in China is responsible for ~ 420,000 premature deaths annually, more than the ~300,000 attributed to urban outdoor...
